titled : The Picnic 39x58" edition of 10 artist proof , archive pigment print ,beautifully Framed, signed on back.
The resultant image, “The Picnic,” so pregnant with implicit narrative and staggeringly profound detail, Had transformed Shung’s approach and intent with the click of a shutter.
Here one casual minute at a picnic table unfolds into an epic tale, studded with vital characters seeming just on the verge of explaining their roles in this ambiguous drama. The woman occupying the center of the frame is paused mid-gesture, while her companion gazes almost apprehensively at something unseen outside the frame, the space between them punctuated by an obscene amount of alcohol for their seemingly small group. Minor characters surround them, each suspended in some private performance with odd props and setpieces, inducing the viewer to fill in the blanks and imagine a story explaining it all. Is it real? Does it even matter, if the scene grabs the viewer with such force?....... excerpt by Gail Braddock Quagliata
